Talking to Miló Moire, performance artist. Naked body against social stereotypes
She appeared in Art Basel. She appeared naked with her body painted with names of clothes. It was Miló Moire´s Script System. We´ve talked to her about her performances and artwork.
¿HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE YOUR WORK? NUDE ART?
I call my art simply performance art. My work is a bidirectional process between humans, like real life dynamic and uncontrollable, always about humanity and the body naked or dressed in exchange with the psyche. My ideas rises from physical feelings in daily routine and in turn I manifest them in this everyday life.
YOUR PERFORMANCES ARE VERY VISUAL AND ATTRACTIVE, IN OUR OPINION, BUT SOME PEOPLE SAY THAT YOUR WORK IS VERY SCANDALOUS. ¿WHY DO YOU THINK THAT EXIST THIS DREAD, FEAR, TO SHOWN NUDE IN THIS SOCIETY?
Living in a digital era produces an abstract body image. Maybe the real body mutated to a foreign body, moral tagged trough fear. People are afraid of confrontation with themself. The direct encounter with a naked human opens the door to intimacy. To look inward in the deep and to confronting oneself is the most uncomfortable zone and takes courage.
ON THE OTHER HAND, IS UNDENIABLE THAT YOU KEEP THE CANONS THAT ON THE ACTUAL SOCIETY IS CONSIDERED AS A VERY BEAUTY WOMAN. DO YOU THINK THAT THIS «ISSUE» CAN RISE SUSPICTIONS BEHIND THE FEMINIST SECTORS? ¿COULD UNDERSTAND AS CONTRADICTORY THAT YOU ARE DOING AND YOUR IMAGE?
In my art I am free and ultimately just as free of a category such as feminism. I am aware that the people of a society prefer to think in pre-categories instead of trying to understand the unfamiliar or to become free from stereotypes. Art is characterized precisely by breaking rules. I make no compromises, trough my artwork I’m expressing the „both/and principle».
TO BE HONEST, WE MET YOU IN 2013, WITH «THE SPLIT BRAIN». ¿WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE STARTING DOING PERMORMANCES AS AN ARTIST?
I started with Performance art 2007 while studying Psychology. During my studies I worked in different areas such as in the social and in advertising. Furthermore I work for nine years with my partner, the renowned photographer Peter Palm supporting him in photo projects such as concept development, organization and image processing. Since my degree in Psychology in late 2011 I work as an artist.
A FEW DAYS AGO WE SAW «THE SCRIPT SISTEM» IN ART BASEL. ¿WHAT WAS ABOUT IT? ¿WHAT WAS THE PERFORMANCE BACKGROUND?
The performance, called «The Script System,» is inspired by the «scripts» theory of cognitive psychology. Each of us knows these scripts that we use every day. In the morning, on the way to work, we act almost automatically, sometimes without awareness of our environment. I wanted to break through this stereotypical everyday blindness and to wake up or shake out this human automats. The reactions of the passengers shows, that even a naked woman in the tram, can not change deeply rooted scripts. Besides, in Basel on Art Basel, THE most significant art fair worldwide, I purposed with my non-commercial performance to contrast the domination of money in art world, to pause to think, provoking-thoughts for finding the dialogue for a fertile symbiosis between the social and the commercial additional value of art. A chance to arouse associations among hermetic institutions and real live through the characteristic voice of art, the love of experimentation. I think it is about time that the art market quit the event character to a certain extent in favor of the love of experimentation. I put this experimentation of Art Basel to the test. I searched the pore for a vivid exchange between artistic freedom and the institution for the elite commerce. At the end the inflexible structures of Art Basel have underpinned the script theory too.
YOU WORK HAS BEEN CENSURED PERSISTENLY. THE AUTHORITIES LOOK TERRIFIED ABOUT FREEDOM QUESTIONS. HOWEVER, IT SEEMS THAT THEY HAVEN´T PROBLEM WITH THE DRAMA THAT EXIST IN EUROPE AND IN THE REST OF THE WORLD ABOUT THE FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS. WHERE IS THIS SOCIETY GOING?
If people see their stability jeopardized, they seek supposedly for identification with tunnel vision, like a horse with blinders. It is a fertile soil for double standards.
FINALLY BASIC AND PERSONAL CONCLUSION: IF ALL PEOPLE WOULD GO NUDE FOR THE STREET, MANY SOCIAL BARRIERS WOULD BE ELIMINATED. SO IT WOULD BE FINE IF ALL WOULD GO NUDE. SO LET´S GO NUDE! ARE YOU AGREE?
A world that resembles a Spencer Tunic motive is pleasant to me. But is a landscape with only naked people not also a monoculture? Only when humans are able and willing to make no distinction between naked and dressed, they get truly physical and spiritual freedom. In this sense: „Let’s go nude or dressed, that’s quite immaterial!»
